I’ve been surprised by the lack of ColorWow Dreamcoat dupes on the internet. The ColorWow Dreamcoat Supernatural Spray is one of themes popular hair products, promising a sleek, frizz-free blowout and glass hair. Chris Appleton, celebrity hairstylist to Kim Kardashian and J.Lo, swears by it (he also works with ColorWow), but beyond its popularity among celebrities it has incredible reviews from all hair types.
Before I discovered Dreamcoat I had frizz after I blow dried my hair, and I wanted that sleek glass hair that looked super glossy and shiny. It’s become one of my go-to products when I want a sleek blowout.
But Dreamcoat isn’t cheap, and it works best when you really saturate the strands with it, which of course uses more of the product. There are a few dupes I’ve found (and tried) that are amazing alternatives whether you’re looking for a cheaper price or something that can better fit into your hair routine.
What ColorWow Dreamcoat Does
ColorWow Dreamcoat is a super lightweight spray that takes away frizz and leaves hair glossy and as reflective as glass. It’s an incredible product for those wanting super straight and sleek glass hair and it also provides heat protection.
It works for all hair types, but it will obviously have the best results on hair that is prone to frizz. They also have a version which is just for those with curly hair.
How to Use ColorWow Dreamcoat the Right Way
To make sure you’re getting the most out of Dreamcoat, use it on towel dried, damp hair. Divide the hair into section to make sure you are coating every strand. Spray it liberally on each section (I give each section a few sprays from root to tip).
Next, blow dry. Dreamcoat is heat-activated, so you have to use heat and tension with a brush to get results. The best results come from blow drying your hair and then following with a flat iron or curling iron with high heat.
Dreamcoat lasts for 3-4 shampoos, so you don’t need to reapply every time you wash your hair. The directions do say not to use other hair styling products along with Dreamcoat to allow it to fully penetrate the hair.
4 Dreamcoat Dupes
Hair Chemist SLEEK Anti-Humidity Shine Coat
Hair Chemist’s dupe of Dreamcoat is gunning for dupe status right down to its ColorWow-like packaging. It’s an affordable alternative you can buy on Amazon, Walmart, or Sally Beauty.
How You Use It
The instructions for use are very similar to ColorWow Dreamcoat: spray onto damp hair divided into sections, then blow dry. This one is also heat-activated, and it also lasts for 3-4 shampoos.
I would recommend this one especially if you have fine or medium hair without a ton of frizz. For my fine-to-medium hair this worked almost exactly like Dreamcoat, giving me shiny and smooth results.
What To Know
- best for fine or medium hair
- if you have coarse, curly, or coily hair, they have a “Curl” version
- an affordable dupe
IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray
The IGK Good Behavior Smoothing Spray is another popular anti-frizz styling product that promises keratin-like results.
How You Use It
The instructions for this spray say to use it on damp hair and then use a blow dryer and then a hot tool (like a flat iron). When used this way I prefer Dreamcoat which is lighter weight. However, I like using this one when my hair is already dried from washing the day before because you can also use it on dry hair before using a hot tool.
What to Know
- feels heavy on those with fine hair
- you can use it on dry hair
- not an affordable alternative to Dreamcoat
John Frieda Frizz-Ease Extra Strength Serum
John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease line has been around for a while and has a bunch of products aimed at making hair smoothing. The Dreamcoat dupe is their Extra-Strength Serum which has argan, coconut, and moringa oil but is a very thin, lightweight serum.
How You Use It
The serum can be used on wet or dry hair and it protects from frizz for 72 hours. Using a dime-sized (use more if you have thick hair) amount of the product run the product over your hair. Avoid the roots and try to evenly apply throughout your hair. It’s meant specially for dry, damaged hair, but anyone can use it and see results. It also protects against heat.
What To Know
- some may prefer a spray to spreading a serum throughout your hair
- can be used on dry hair
- doesn’t require use of hot tools for results
- doesn’t combat frizz as well as Dreamcoat for me
- an affordable dupe
Drybar Liquid Glass Miracle Smoothing Sealant
Drybar’s Smoothing Sealant is a part of the Liquid Glass line of products aimed at making hair smooth and shiny. It uses their own Smooth Shot Complex which create a high-shine finish. It also has a pretty strong fragrance of coconut, amber, and vanilla.
How You Use It
The instructions are similar to Dreamcoat: apply to damp hair in sections, blow dry, use a high heat tool.
What To Know
- works amazingly on fine to medium hair
- they have another version that is best for coarse hair
- not an affordable dupe
ColorWow Dreamcoat Dupes Conclusion
The Dreamcoat dupes are out there whether you’re looking for something more affordable, something you can use on dry hair, or something in serum form. If you have coarse hair, look into the Drybar version for coarser hair or the ColorWow and Hair Chemist versions for curly and coily hair. On my fine to medium hair I had sleek results with all of them so they’re definitely worth a try!
