Growing out your hair isn’t a quick game, no matter how much we would like it to be, so I’ve been following this hair growth routine for the past couple months to get longer, thicker hair.
A few months after having my son, I started experiencing postpartum hair loss. When it started to slowly grow back, I knew I wanted to supercharge that hair growth and fill in some areas around my face where the hair grew in thin or not at all.
It was hard to get started with hair growth since I didn’t know where to start, but I think with any long-term goal, it helps to layer on strategies until you have a full-blown routine. After a couple of months, I’ve seen some great results with hair growth. Some of these steps require products, but some are easy, free, and natural. Anyone can get started by incorporating these steps into your current hair routine.
Morning Hair Growth Routine
In the morning, I don’t have a lot of time for a full blown routine, but I try to incorporate a couple of steps that fit in with my existing routine.
Hair growth supplement
I was skeptical for a long time about hair growth supplements, wondering if they actually work. As I delved into the science, I learned that there are studies suggesting several hair supplements on the market have shown great results. I decided to try them out. I’ve been using the Nutrafol Women’s Vegan Clinically Proven Hair Growth Supplement for Thinning Hair.
This has been pretty easy to take in the morning since I already take other vitamins. It takes 3-6 months to see results, but it claims to grow hair faster, longer, and stronger.
Hair Growth Smoothie
I love a smoothie for breakfast and I’ve found it’s an easy way to get in some nutrients that are great for hair growth.
Blueberry Hair Growth Smoothie Recipe
- 1/4 cup of blueberries
- 1 1/2 cups of almond milk
- 1/4 cup of spinach (I prefer mine frozen for a colder smoothie)
- 2 tbsp of chia or ground flaxseeds
- 1/4 of an avocado
- 1 scoop of chocolate collagen powder
The blueberries are rich in vitamin C which aids collagen.
Spinach has so many nutrients that are good for hair growth like folate and iron.
Seeds like chia seeds and ground flaxseeds are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Avocados are a good source of Vitamin E.
Collagen in powder form has potential as an aid to hair growth. I love Vital Proteins Chocolate Collagen Peptides!
Shower Routine for Hair Growth
Your hair routine is an obvious time to incorporate some hair growth strategies since you are already focusing on your hair. There are little things you can do to add to your hair washing routine that can help your hair grow.
Rosemary oil before a shower
Rosemary oil has shown a lot of promise for hair growth when applied to the scalp. I’ll admit I haven’t been doing this step as much because it does make my hair oily. If you want to try it, mix 5 drops of rosemary essential oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil like jojoba oil or argan oil (pure rosemary essential oil not mixed in a carrier oil could irritate your scalp.) Apply the mixture to your scalp and let sit for a few hours before hopping in the shower and rinsing it off.
Use a shampoo with caffeine
I’ll admit, shampoo is probably not going to be the most effective part of your routine when it comes to hair growth. It sits on the scalp for such a short period of time that effective hair growth ingredients don’t have enough time to penetrate the scalp and follicles.
However, caffeine has shown a lot of promise for hair growth and there are several shampoos with caffeine that also work well to cleanse your hair. I really like the SheaMoisture Strengthen and Restore Shampoo and Conditioner which has caffeine for this purpose.
Scalp massage in the shower
When it comes to things you can do to improve hair growth, this step has to be the easiest (and the cheapest!) The science is still out on whether it makes a real impact, but it's said that stimulating your scalp through scalp massage stretches the hair follicle cells which makes hair grow in thicker.
I do this while shampooing my hair and I sometimes use a scalp massager which feels nice and helps me thoroughly clean my hair. You can do it in the morning or at night, with oil or without. Plus, it just feels good.
Hair oil on ends
Putting hair oil on the ends of my hair isn’t so much to help my hair grow, but to help keep my hair moisturized and healthy so I don’t have breakage (and therefore shorter hair.) I use the Verb Ghost Weightless Hair Oil and I apply it to my hair when damp. I’ll put a little more on my ends when my hair is dry if I feel I want a little more moisture.
Nighttime Hair Growth Routine
Since I already have a nighttime routine, it’s been easy to add these last few steps that are really impactful to hair growth and my overall hair health.
Hair Growth Serum
There are a lot of hair growth serums out there, and I decided to try The Ordinary’s Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density since it had a lot of good reviews and it’s affordable. I was worried it would make my hair greasy but after applying my hair dried completely.
I apply at night (you only need to apply once a day) onto the areas where I want hair growth and massage it into the area for a few seconds. It’s a lightweight water-based serum that has procapil and caffeine for hair growth. Even after using it for a few weeks I started to see initial small results!
Satin Pillowcase
Satin pillowcases are great for overall hair health, and the last thing you want to do when trying to grow out your hair is damage the hair you already have. Satin pillowcases let hair glide without snagging as it would on a cotton pillowcase. This results in less breakage and healthier ends (as well as less frizz.) A satin pillowcase is an awesome addition to anyone’s hair routine.
Hair Growth Routine Conclusion
This is a great hair growth routine for anyone looking to grow longer, thicker hair! Even if you include only a couple of these steps they will help your hair become stronger and healthier!
