Hair Quiz

What is lamellar water?

Lamellar water is a water-based treatment but although it is a lightweight treatment, it packs a huge punch. This is because the lightweight nature of the product is able to penetrate the hair cuticle more easily than thicker hair masks and conditioners, and it deposits conditioning agents, like amino acids, and ‘fills in’ damaged areas of your hair instead of targeting the entire hair strand.

The cuticle of each strand is made smoother which boosts shine that lasts until your next hair wash.

How does it work?

After I first used lamellar water last year, I was surprised but how much more visible shine and touchable softness my hair had after one use. The product typically comes in a bottle with a nozzle since the product itself has a very thin texture.

Most brands have a guide on the side of the bottle that indicates how much you should be using, typically 1 dose for fine to medium hair, and 2-3 doses for medium to thick hair.

Who can use lamellar water?

Any hair type can use lamellar water, and it is especially good for those with damaged or dry hair, especially if it’s been colored or for hair that is curly or textured, but if your hair is generally healthy, the benefits are still obvious. It also works as a great detangler. Anyone searching for how to get silky hair in 1 minute will find this quick shine rinse to be a good addition to their routine.

How to get silky hair instantly with lamellar water

First, shampoo your hair like normal and rise out. Lamellar water should be applied similarly to your conditioner on your mid-lengths and ends so open the nozzle and let the lamellar water flow, but make sure you apply the amount listed on the back of the bottle (usually 1 dose for fine to medium hair, 2-3 doses for medium to thick hair).

For my fine to medium hair I typically use 1 dose. I massage it a little to make sure it has really penetrated my hair. Many report a slight warming feeling from the product once it’s been applied. After I’ve closed the nozzle and put the bottle down it’s almost ready to wash it, but I sometimes let it settle for up to a minute just in case.

Finish with conditioner if you feel you need it, but you’ll notice the lamellar water has already made your hair much softer and silkier to the touch. The results are even better if you blow dry your hair, but either way you will have silky hair instantly.

Are there any downsides to using lamellar water?

Lamellar water is pretty safe and most people have amazing results if the reviews are anything to go by, but if applied to your scalp (which you should avoid! Apply to your mid-lengths and ends only!) it can tingle a little or even leave your scalp a little irritated. Just make sure to keep it away from your scalp.

Also, the liquid does come out fast from the nozzle since the texture is so thin (t is only slightly thicker than water) so make sure to not waste too much when opening it.

Best lamellar water products for silky hair

There are only a few lamellar water products on the market currently (it is new technology after all), but thankfully there are a few affordable versions so you can try it out without making too big of a dent in your wallet.

L’Oreal Paris Elvive 8 Second Wonder Water

The 8 Second Water deserves its name. This hyped-up product is in high demand for a reason—each time I use it I’m stunned by the high shine it leaves my hair with. This one makes it into my (very) minimal haircare routine when I’m looking for a little bit of oomph.

Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Glass Water

I haven’t used this one myself but it is very similar to L’Oreal in terms of price, usability, and results.

Redken Extreme Bleach Recovery Lamellar Water Treatment

If you are looking for how to get silky hair specifically for color-treated or highlighted hair, Redken’s offering has ingredients specifically for colored strands.

Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask

This one isn’t technically marketed as lamellar water but I’m using this one currently and the results and process are very similar to the products mentioned above. Rinse out for amazing softness and shine, as well as Amika’s lovely scent.

Masil 8 Seconds Salon Hair Mask

Masil is a Korean beauty brand, marking K-beauty’s popularity in haircare in addition to skincare. This 8 second hair mask works similarly to L’Oreal’s 8 Second Wonder Water but the texture is thicker which causes less of it to end up down the drain.
